Fish and bees have learned to communicate with the help of robot translators
It’s hard to believe, but two very different species of living things, fish and bees, have learned to communicate with each other. Of course, this is too loudly said, but they can really exchange information with each other about their actions. This became possible thanks to robots-translators, which introduced in each of two groups-they analyze actions surrounding creatures, share this information with each other, and make brings to repeat their actions.

The project was launched by the robotic group EPFL, which creates robots that can infiltrate flocks of animals and influence their behavior. In 2017, she introduced a robotic fish that is so realistic that “relatives” consider it their leader and trustfully follow her. Two years later, the team assembled a robotic system that can manipulate a swarm of bees.
In the case of fish, the manipulation is carried out by means of movements of the tail and vibrations. Bees can also be controlled through fluctuations in air and temperature,and with this new system copes. Each robot is able to catch the movements of the pack and report it to an ally from another group, being at a distance of more than 700 kilometers.
We have created an unprecedented bridge between two species of animals, allowing them to share information about their actions. They even began to adopt some characteristics of each other. Bees have become a little more restless and less prone to clustering, and fish on the contrary, began to gather together more often.

To prove the possibility of communication between the two species, scientists conducted an experiment. Bees were released to the site with two robotic terminals, and fish swam in a ring-shaped pool. It was expected that when the robotic fish will lead his group to swim counterclockwise, the bees will gather in a pile at one of the terminals. At first, everything was chaotic, but after 25 minutes, the researchers achieved their goal — all the fish began to swim in the same direction, and the bees gathered in one place.
It is believed that such robots-translators will allow people to manage flocks of animals. For example, so you can make birds fly away from airports, and bees — pollinate plants only in certain areas. The technology has a really great future, and it is already showing excellent results.
