MRI vest will help to detect breast cancer more effectively

X-ray and MRI can effectively detect breast cancer even in the early stages, but because of the prevalence of the disease, scientists are constantly trying to develop faster and more affordable alternatives. Magnetic resonance imaging is considered the most preferred method of diagnosis due to the absence of harmful radiation, but the scanning process is quite long and is more expensive than x-rays. She also has another big minus, and a team of scientists from Vienna figured out how to get rid of it.

The researchers explained that the current method of MRI scanning of mammary glands shows different effectiveness depending on the shape of the body of patients. To equalize the accuracy of the diagnosis, the researchers decided to abandon the vertical scanners with two disposable cups with radio frequency coils. Instead, they offered to use a special vest that is suitable for all women.

It is woven from a fabric to which 32 radio frequency coils are sewn. Also, the vest is equipped with motion sensors, which help to reduce breathing noise of patients and thereby increase the clarity of images. If the usual MRI scan of the breast women stood on their feet, when using a vest, they lie on their backs.

An important feature of the project is that in the supine position the chest is smoothed, which means that a much larger part of it is close to the receiver. Thus, the signal becomes stronger and the scanning time can be significantly reduced.

At the moment, the vest is still under development. Previously, researchers have already published reports on successful tests, but they do not yet consider it ready for use device.
