T-shirt made of this fabric will make you walk in the fire
Some clothing manufacturers equip their jackets with health sensors and other electronics. Such features are certainly interesting, but most consumers expect from clothes very banal thing — it is important that it is heated in the cold and refreshed in the heat. Fortunately, some teams of researchers are well aware of this — for example, researchers from the University of Maryland (UMD) have developed temperature-adaptive material from which you can make great sports t-shirts.
Material for “smart” t-shirts
The researchers were inspired to create tissue by an important property of the human body — it exchanges heat with the environment by means of thermal radiation. Manufacturers of sportswear are already using boost, the throughput of the materials, but their properties remain active at all times, not just when it is needed.
To make the tissue react to changes in body temperature during physical activity, the researchers created it from a thread consisting of two fibers absorbing and repelling moisture. Due to the different reaction to moisture, when the body sweats, the fibers cling to each other — the threads become thinner and pores are formed on the fabric. Also, the fabric has carbon nanotubes, which increase its emissivity.
If you look at the picture as a whole, it turns out that in sports the human body is cooled in two ways. First, it is ventilated through the pores in the t-shirt. Secondly, nanotubes help the body to remove more heat. When a person is in a calm state and does not sweat, the material retains the optimum temperature, and the person does not feel excessive cold.
To test the effectiveness of the tissue, the researchers placed it in a container with adjustable humidity. By measuring its carrying capacity, the researchers found that with an increase in humidity by more than 90%, the carrying capacity increases accordingly to 35.4%.
Many research groups and companies are engaged in the creation of materials for the “clothes of the future”. Sometimes they do not need to be created at all — at the end of 2018, Fast Company released a jacket made of graphene, which also perfectly removes and retains heat depending on the surrounding conditions.
