Brian Bishop’s keyboard in Austin, Texas, literally smoked. Recognized nationwide high-speed typewriting, he was preparing a polite request, well-known futurist from the UK. He is a transhumanist, that is, he believes that people can be improved with the help of technology. He has long urged others to do something with the current state of people.

Designer babies: genetically modified babies
In may, Bishop and his business partner Max berry, a former research fellow at a biotechnology company, “opened a company focused on the production of designer babies and genetic engineering of the human germ line.” He noted that “laboratory work has begun”and” we already have the first client in the person of a parent”.
He said he wanted ethical advice to support the outstanding geneticist George Church of Harvard University, whose list of potential genetic improvements — a list of genes including PCSK9 and CCR5 presented in dozens of reports — was called the “wish list” of the post-human era.
Bishop hopes to turn these opportunities into reality. A copy of his business proposal says his enterprise plans to allow parents to have transgenic children who can “build muscle without weightlifting,” who will possess the genes of long-livers or the blood of the AB+ group, that is, with the ability to receive transfusions from anyone.
In November, a Chinese biophysicist stated that he had created the first babies with edited genes. This news caused a global resonance and led to China’s tough measures against the scientist. Since then, as an initiative of Heh Czarque was disclosed, the leaders of science were quick to speak out against unethical research. Some wished to impose a moratorium on the creation of genetically modified children. Others say that the necessary detailed technical criteria and medical advice are needed to allow IVF embryos to be altered safely and for purposes agreed by the medical community. Gene editing specialists from China, the US and the UK are planning to create another Committee that will monitor all this.
While new guidelines and public censures may be kept under the control of professional scientists with government grants, they do not deter people like Bishop, “a relatively well-known self-taught biohacker” (as written in his resume), who spends thousands of dollars promoting his own vision of creating genetic superpowers of newborns.
A few weeks ago, Antonio Regalado, a reporter for MIT Technology Review has got a few slides to raise funds, which outlines the business proposal of the Bishop: the forecasts on billions of dollars of income from the creation of hundreds of thousands of superior children. The person who sent the slides wished to remain anonymous, but could not Express confidence in whether it was “nonsense” or “terrifyingly plausible.” The man expressed his fear that transhumanists are ready to translate these ideas into reality and decided to stick to Bishop denunciation.
According to Bishop’s slides, design people will not be created the way it was in China, by injecting gene-editing molecules into the egg at the time of fertilization. Instead, in the process of biohacking, gene therapy will be performed on the testicles of a male volunteer. Thus, sperm, containing DNA with improvements, can be used for fertilization women. Others say that the idea bordered on the absurd. For example, these two entrepreneurs say that their target market is “the whole future of humanity” and propose a plan to spread the gene therapy virus containing all the cumbersome useful information about genetic instructions. “My reaction is that I’m wondering if I should take this seriously at all,” says Samuel Sternberg, an associate Professor at Columbia University. He wondered whether the real purpose of the Bishop is to be provocative and to be the center of attention.
Other people familiar with Bishop’s plans also think it’s mostly empty talk, however, there may be something behind them. “It’s much less advanced than Jiang Hu, who had substantial capital and knew what he was doing,” says Church, a genetic engineer from Harvard who spoke with Bishop. Church admits that the sperm approach is technically feasible, but will require “significant debugging.”
“It could definitely happen — so we need to talk about it.” A geneticist who holds an Advisory position in a large number of companies and genetic businesses says he would not agree to such a role in Bishop’s case. He told the Bishop to seek advice on ethics and to obtain FDA approval and to conduct appropriate clinical trials. “I give advice to almost anyone, especially if I think he needs it,” Church says.

Bishop and berry refused to name a potential client or say if one of them plans to become a volunteer during a telephone interview. Bishop is already well known in the cryptocurrency industry: until recently he worked for LedgerX, a bitcoin exchanger, and even added a couple of lines of code to the underlying software that runs this digital currency. Regalado first met Bishop last may at a scientific conference called the Genome Project–Write, organized by Church on Harvard’s medical campus. This meeting brought together people interested in futuristic applications of genetic engineering. Bishop told him that he was working on a design babies project, but most of all Regalado’s attention was attracted by his participation in Bitcoin — then it costs $ 9072 per coin. There was no reason to take Bishop too seriously at the time. But that changed after news from China. Hardly anyone expected that the first CRISPR-kids will appear so soon. At the same time, there were signals of tacit approval. This summer, the UK’s leading ethics Council disagreed with the conventional wisdom, releasing a report with the message that there’s nothing wrong with trying to “influence” children’s abilities, bodies, or views by altering their DNA.
Some Kulibin enthusiasts from the world of biology also do not believe that governments need to intervene in what is happening to human genomes, and some of them have also started to use unverified gene therapy on their own. These experiments were mostly useless and designed to attract attention. One of the entrepreneurs who stuck a syringe full of DNA into his thigh was later found dead in a sensory deprivation chamber. Other — Gosia Syner — injected “editing the genes of ingredients” during the conference in San Francisco in 2017.
In short, in the biohacker community, the idea that someone might try to change their own sperm-producing cells wouldn’t be anything strange. “If Brian had said he intended to modify another person, I would have said no, you’re crazy,” says Hessel. “But if he wanted to do it with himself, I would say: well, okay…”.
Regalado and failed to determine the sitting Bishop on the state of bitcoin. He said that he “earned and lost millions of dollars” on a volatile digital currency, but was skeptical about the time when the coins were cheaper, perhaps missing the chance for a real digital revolution. It was Bishop who sent the money through PayPal for all the necessary reagents. “He paid me some fluorescent DNA staining kits,” says Ishi. “It’s a couple hundred dollars. It’s expensive. It was like, ” if you need anything, let me know.” Of course, I never tried to impregnate anyone with this, haha.”
Based on his experience with dogs, Ishi says that an Amateur biologist has no chance of making a designer baby while working on the weekends. “Is home-made biology approaching the creation of CRISPR-kids? Not even close, ” he says. “But if some rich man pays a scientist to work, it’ll happen.”
“We should not talk about Brian, but about the invisible gray area, the layer of the gray biotechnology market, where people with resources can achieve their goals. Can Bishop and berry handle it? Laboratory in Ukraine

Bishop organized the tour after he was asked to demonstrate the scientific basis of his project. Previously, Bishop sent Regalado a photo of an open mouse lying on a microscope substrate, as well as a close-up of trace dyes introduced into the testicles. Krasnenkov said that to date, the experiments were carried out at approximately 30 mice. In a few cases researchers were expecting limited success with the inclusion of genetic material in the testicles of animals. This can be done by inputting invisible DNA chains and applying an electric shock so that sperm-producing cells take on the genetic load. So far, no transgenic mice have been created.
During the dialogue Krasnenkov said that he is not ready to see people changed through the sperm — pending more research. “I don’t want anyone to do it in a hurry; I don’t want to do it quickly.”
Since Regalado’s first conversation with Bishop in December, he and berry have begun to question the sperm-changing approach. Berry, who holds a bachelor’s degree in biology, believes that they should adapt the technique of Velocimouse, invented by the new York biotechnology company as a quick way to create mice with non-standard DNA. This method will include the treatment of human IVF embryos: first the removal of stem cells, and then, after genetic manipulation with them, their introduction into the second embryo. That would be a radical way to make a human child.
You can close your eyes to the attempts of Bishop and berry, as they may fail. But it will be difficult to keep people interested in creating designer babies. “Will the FDA start putting a spoke in the wheels if we provide parents with this technology in a private setting with parental consent? – asks berry a question. “I expect there will be legal battles that I hope we can Finance and support.” Currently, the creation of genetically modified children would be illegal in the US, but in other countries — the same Ukraine — the conditions are not so strict. In the end, Regalado wondered what Bishop’s motives were. He spoke openly of his ideas, but was silent when asked about his family. No one knows why he has become so deeply obsessed with human perfection. Bishop said his motivation is very complex.
