Google released the first Android update this year

Google has introduced the January security update, the distribution of which has already begun among the owners of smartphones line Google Pixel, which means that soon it will be available for installation on third-party devices. The update, which became the first this year, eliminates more than a dozen firmware vulnerabilities, which include critical ones, and also brings an improvement in sound quality when recording video on the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL camera.

In total, according to the security Bulletin published on Google, the January update addresses 14 vulnerabilities. Some of them were found in the firmware of Qualcomm processors, posing a serious threat to users and the safety of their personal data. Fixed vulnerability contributed to a privilege escalation, allowing an attacker who discovered them, remotely execute on a vulnerable device arbitrary code.

Vulnerabilities in Qualcomm processors

Interestingly, almost all of the critical vulnerabilities found in Android devices are related to hardware, the manufacturer of which in the vast majority of cases is Qualcomm. The impression that the American supplier of processors carelessly approaches the issue of ensuring security of production and the final consumer.

The January security update will most likely be unavailable to Nexus 6P and 5X owners. In November last year officially ended a three-year cycle of updating these smartphones, which means that Google has every right to no longer produce updates for them. Despite this, the devices received a December update to fix a number of vulnerabilities, indirectly confirming that in exceptional cases, the search giant can neglect even its own principles.
