Working on the International Space Station is not only strenuous duty, experiments and dangerous spacewalks. The crew of the station is allowed to celebrate various holidays in accordance with the culture and preferences. At the same time, one of the most interesting in this regard is the New Year, because unlike us, who are in the same time zone, astronauts are in constant motion around the Earth. So, flying in orbit, they can celebrate the coming of next year many times.
It is worth noting that the first in orbit the New year was met by Soviet cosmonauts Georgy Grechko and Yuri Romanenko in 1978, who were on Board the Salyut station.
A few days ago, the official channel of Roscosmos posted a new year’s greetings from Russian cosmonaut Oleg Kononenko on Youtube. The full version of the video greetings is available at the end of the article. Oleg said that this time the crew of the International space station will meet the coming 2019 year 15 times. In General, depending on the position of the station, the new year may come on it 16 times. Oleg Kononenko reminded that 2018 was an anniversary year for the ISS, since its construction began 20 years ago in 1998. Also, the cosmonaut passed your comments and appreciation.
“Thanks to the talent and professionalism of designers, engineers and cosmonauts from different countries, 58 major international expeditions have already worked in our space house, the crews of which have become one big orbital family. I am happy to be a member of this family and congratulate all my colleagues on the anniversary. Let’s take care of this world, everything in it, and enjoy every minute of it, because dreams come true, happy New year!”- quoted the cosmonaut RIA-Novosti.
It is also interesting that, as previously reported, this time tangerines were delivered to the ISS. Citrus aroma without which no cost, no New Year. As the head of the Department of nutrition of the Institute of biomedical problems (IBMP) Alexander Agureev told,
“The station brought the 4 pounds of apples, 3 pounds of oranges and 3 pounds of grapefruit. The crew also asked to bring 10 jars of caviar. At the same time, oranges are usually delivered to the ISS, since tangerines are not in very good condition. However, in honor of the new year, it was decided to make an exception.”
