The procedure of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has long been an indispensable tool for the diagnosis of a variety of conditions. It is especially useful when scanning the brain. But very soon the MRI will become even more accurate, as a group of Russian scientists plans to introduce a new method of tomography into clinical practice, which will more accurately and qualitatively diagnose violations of connections between neurons of the brain, which will help with a number of injuries and diseases such as multiple sclerosis.

According to the news portal of Tomsk region, Professor of Tomsk state University (TSU) Vasily Yarnykh is responsible for the development. He, by the way is also an employee of the University of Washington. The new method of MRI is based on the quantitative assessment of myelin in different structures of the brain. Myelin is the sheath of the spikes of neurons. With the destruction of the myelin sheath communication between neurons are disturbed due to the deterioration of signal transmission. This is one of the main signs of multiple sclerosis.

The new technique is based on special protocols of magnetic resonance imaging in combination with a number of mathematical algorithms, which eventually makes it possible to obtain “maps of the molecular proton fraction”, which allows to judge the content of myelin in brain cells. Now vengeance is preparing for the clinical stage of testing, as experiments on laboratory animals have shown the promise of technology. As stated by the head of the laboratory of neurobiology TSU Marina khodanovich,

“Our task in this study was to find an adequate model, that is, the conditions under which myelin destruction occurs in mice, and to compare the amount of myelin on the brain sections with the results of MRI studies. We carried out this work in cooperation with the Institute of Cytology and genetics and the Institute of organic chemistry in Novosibirsk.”
