Myelin is the sheath of the spikes of neurons. With the destruction of the myelin sheath communication between neurons are disturbed due to the deterioration of signal transmission. This is one of the main signs of multiple sclerosis.
The new technique is based on special protocols of magnetic resonance imaging in combination with a number of mathematical algorithms, which eventually makes it possible to obtain “maps of the molecular proton fraction”, which allows to judge the content of myelin in brain cells. “Our task in this study was to find an adequate model, that is, the conditions under which myelin destruction occurs in mice, and to compare the amount of myelin on the brain sections with the results of MRI studies.
