While you were sleeping Qualcomm launched the third annual Qualcomm Tech Summit conference. According to tradition, it is within the framework of this event that the company announces the release of the flagship chipset, the role of which this year will be performed by Snapdragon 855, and also tells about its most advanced developments in the field of hardware. The main theme of the first day of the event was the fifth generation networks.
Qualcomm President Cristiano OMON began the event by introducing guests to a tour of the benefits of 5G over earlier communication technologies. He spoke with such enthusiasm that there was no doubt that we were on the threshold of a truly breakthrough technology that could change our understanding of the Network.
Why do we need 5G
According to Amon, the response rate of devices with support for 5G is so high that it will open for users a lot of previously inaccessible features from multiplayer games with an abundance of special effects and battles to the visualization of online maps and AR-shopping.
But this opportunity will not be available to everyone. According to confirmed information, at the beginning of 2019 Qualcomm plans to supply 5g-compatible X50 modems to 20 smartphone manufacturers, which did not include such a popular vendor as Meizu. However, the representatives of Qualcomm promised that by the end of next year more vendors will have the opportunity to start implementing the support of the fifth generation networks.
Smartphones with support for 5G
Operators will begin to deploy the infrastructure to ensure the operation of 5G in the next year. To be on time, Qualcomm works closely with at&T, Verizon, EE, and other operators. But Russian communication providers were not among them. However, this should be expected, given the plans of local authorities to introduce 5G not earlier than 2022, and only in the largest cities of the country.
Did not remain without attention and the Snapdragon chipset 855. A distinctive feature of the new” stone ” is in – depth support for AI, as well as improved compared to Snapdragon 845 ability to process graphics and visualization of three-dimensional objects through AR-and VR-technologies. To do this, the manufacturer has equipped the chipset with a dedicated computer vision processor (CV), which will also contribute to improving the quality of photo and video.
Separately, the presentation talked about the safety of the latest chipset. As stated by the President of Qualcomm, Snapdragon 855 will by default support hardware fingerprint identification systems placed under the display. The technology is called 3D Sonic Sensor and is able to offer not only more convenient fingerprinting, but also additional levels of protection compared to traditional identification methods.
In just a few hours the second day of Qualcomm Tech Summit will start, within the framework of which the manufacturer will tell new details about the upcoming chipset. Most likely, the second day will be devoted to talks about a more advanced technological process of production, as well as the graphical capabilities of the “stone” that can “pull” the game close to the console level.
