On Board the International station for the first time in history began an experiment in which the bioprinter will be printed mini-organ. The results of the experiment will be published in early 2019. The experiment was delivered by 3D Bioprinting Solutions laboratory. On Wednesday, December 5, the company “Invitro”, which owns the laboratory, reported to the information publication “RIA Novosti”.
The experimental bioprinter was sent to the ISS from Baikonur on December 3.
"Cosmonaut Oleg Kononenko, previously trained to work with a bioprinter, began an experiment on living tissue printing on December 4 at 17:00 Moscow time. As a result of the experiment, it is planned to obtain cartilaginous tissue and an organ construct of the mouse thyroid gland," the press service of Invitro quotes RIA Novosti.
It is also reported that in the spring of 2019 it is planned to send a bioprinter developed in the United States to the ISS.

Organ bioprinting technologies can be used to treat cancer, in particular, increasing the speed of selection of the necessary drugs. Thanks to the ability to print living tissue, scientists will be able to test the toxicity of certain anti-cancer drugs that can be used in treatment. This will allow more effective selection of therapy, causing the least damage to the patient’s body and achieve maximum impact on the tumor.
If we talk about more distant prospects, the technology of organ bioprinting can become indispensable in the colonization of other planets of the Solar system. With the help of such devices, the colonizers will be able to create organs for transplantation if necessary.
