The world’s most powerful particle accelerator went silent. On December 3, 2018, the particles made their last run, completed the last round of the Large hadron Collider, after which scientists shut down the machine for two years for planned improvements and updates. Located in the CERN particle physics laboratory in Geneva, this accelerator has pushed together approximately 16 million billion protons since 2015, reaching its current energy of 13 trillion electron volts.
The planned improvements, which will be made to the Collider before the machine is launched again in 2021, will bring the energy to 14 trillion electron volts. Actually, the TANK was initially oriented to this value.

During lower-energy collisions from 2009 to 2013, scientists discovered the elusive Higgs boson, filling the last missing cell in the overall picture of the Standard model of particle physics.
The planned improvements to the machine will also lay the Foundation for further reincarnation of the Collider in the future, known as High-Luminosity LHC. This update, which will be ready by 2026, is expected to increase the speed of the proton collision by at least five times.
The $ 10 billion facility is run by CERN, the European organization for nuclear research, and collides subatomic particles with each other at almost the speed of light.
The collision uses two adjacent tubes, beam lines equipped with powerful superconducting electromagnets cooled by liquid helium to a temperature below -271 degrees Celsius.
These magnets direct beams of protons or atomic nuclei along each of the lines in opposite directions. Particle collisions occur in four giant underground detectors located at the intersection of the ray lines.
