Designed an attracting beam from Star Wars

Surely even if you have not seen Star Wars, you know that in various fantastic works there is a special attracting beam that can immobilize a spacecraft (or person) and move it wherever it pleases. Like any technology that is described by science fiction, this one had a quite logical rationale and recently a group of researchers from the University of Adelaide created a similar attracting beam. True, stop the starships until they succeed.

Naturally, the technology has a purely scientific application and at the moment it is used to attract atoms and prevent them from moving. According to the editors of Physical Review Applied, the research is led by scientists led by Dr. Philip Light and graduate student Ashby Hilton, who themselves describe the technology as follows:

“Although the attractive rays in the films are green or blue, in this case invisible infrared light is in the base. The beam captures atoms floating in the chamber. Every atom that falls within the scope of a ray is drawn into it. And so you can hold it indefinitely. Our experiments show that we can control light very precisely in order to create the right conditions for controlling atoms. ”

Now a “searchlight” beam is used to hold atoms, but scientists want to use a beam for future tests, which will be formed from a full light cone. This will keep the atoms more efficiently and in total darkness. In addition, such studies can be useful in the study of the laws of quantum mechanics.

“What is really interesting is that now we have the opportunity to conduct quantum experiments on trapped atoms. Our first experiments involve the use of these atoms as elements of quantum memory. We hope that ultimately our work can become part of a completely secure communication channel. This is an extremely interesting idea – we can move atoms and manipulate them, but are able to protect them from the destructive effect of intense light. ”
